Most SMEs are destined to stay small. Language such as “seed investment” and “incubator” may be misleading as growing a venture is not like agrowing a baby or a plant, and the vast majority of small businesses do not naturally evolve into larger businesses. With an average age of 15-30 years, high-growth firms are not what we normally think of as start-ups or small businesses. Research shows that they account for 1% - 6% of firms in an economy, and are responsible for at least half of all economic growth and job creation. High-growth ventures may be more prevalent in basic industries, such as food services, real estate and construction, than in the ICT, tech and internet sectors, but these sectors have undeniably been, and continue to be, shaped by nimble and disruptive young firms with an innovative approach to ‘business as usual’. To support rapid economic growth and job creation, there is a need for an enabling environment for market-led, export-oriented firms with the potential to scale across countries and regions. This session will explore the key components needed to sustain complex entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems where high-growth firms in the ICT, internet and technology sectors can develop and thrive, including human capacity building, skills development, access to professional services, access to follow-on finance and capital markets, and policy and regulation.
